FREE TOWN – Hya, migrante giunta in Italia illegalmente, rimane intrappolata in una safe-house gestita da una rete di trafficanti, dalla quale è possibile svincolarsi solo saldando il debito previsto per la tratta. Nella sospensione di un microcosmo emotivo, fatto di poche stanze e gesti ripetuti, Hya trova inaspettatamente nuove sicurezze. Logorata dalle circostanze precarie e dalle ripetute violenze subite dal marito Bikila, sceglie di familiarizzare con il trafficante a loro affidato. In breve tempo, questo triangolo di forze culminerà in una violenza tanto disperata da sovvertire ogni gesto, anche il più meschino, alla ricerca di un solo fine: la libertà.

FREE TOWN – Hya, an immigrant who comes to Italy illegally, is trapped in a safe-house run by a network of human-smugglers. The only way out is to pay off the debt owned for her passage. In a tiny world apart, delineated by a few sparse rooms and simple routines, Hya unexpectedly discovers newfound security. Worn out by the precarious situation and the repeated violence of her husband Bikila, she chooses to get familiar with one of the smugglers left to keep an eye on them. In no time at all, this triangle will shatter into stunningly desperate violence where only one objective holds away: freedom.

Pietro Malegori – Nel 2008 inizia il suo percorso professionale come montatore a Milano, lavorando due anni nella casa di produzione pubblicitaria Filmmaster. Negli anni successivi collabora con svariati artisti come Gabriele Salvatores, Willem Dafoe, Francesco Jodice e Marco Gentile. In parallelo inizia a dirigere spot pubblicitari per brand nazionali ed internazionali, tra cui Yamaha, Carrera, BMW, Engie e Nokia. Dal 2012 al 2015 scrive e dirige alcuni cortometraggi iniziando a farsi conoscere nei festival nazionali. Con il cortometraggio Son of Tibet, basato sul tema delle auto-immolazioni contro il regime, ottiene il riconoscimento dalla comunità tibetana per l’impegno sociale ed incontra il Dalai Lama per una proiezione privata. Nel 2015 realizza per Sky Italia una serie in cinque episodi sul mondo della produzione musicale. Artisti internazionali come Ludovico Einaudi, Jack Savoretti e Melanie de Biasio svelano al pubblico le loro fonti di ispirazione. Nel 2017 co-produce il cortometraggio Moby Dick, con protagonista Kasia Smutniak. Il film vince ai Nastri d’Argento come miglior cortometraggio lo stesso anno. In questi anni collabora con il regista Alessandro Cattaneo, partecipando alla produzione di tre documentari tra cui ricordiamo: Wide Blue Delivery vincitore come miglior film al Napoli Film Festival e selezionato in più di 15 festival nazionali e internazionali; Res Creata, film che affronta il tema del rapporto tra uomini e animali, selezionato a Hot Docs 2020 e ai Nastri d’Argento 2021. Nel 2018 inizia la scrittura del suo primo lungometraggio come regista, ambientato in Siria durante la guerra civile.

Pietro Malegori – In 2008, Malegori began his professional journey as an editor in Milan, working for two years at Filmmaster, a production company specialised in advertising. In the following years, he collaborated with various important artists, such as Gabriele Salvatores, Willem Dafoe, Francesco Jodice and Marco Gentile. At the same time, he began directing publicity spots for national and international brands like Yamaha, Carrera, BMW, Engie and Nokia. From 2012 to 2015, he wrote and directed several short films and began receiving attention at national film festivals. With the short film Son of Tibet, based on the practice of self-immolation against the occupying regime in that Nation, he received recognition from the exiled community of Tibet for his social commitment and even met the Dalai Lama for a private screening. In 2015, he created a series of five episodes for Sky Italia on the world of music production. International artists such as Ludovico Einaudi, Jack Savoretti and Melanie de Biasio revealed their sources of inspiration to the public. In 2017, he co-produced the short film Moby Dick, starring Kasia Smutniak. The film won at the prestigious Nastri d’Argento Film Awards (Italy’s oldest film awards) as best short film that same year. During these years, he also worked with director Alessandro Cattaneo, helping create three documentaries including Wide Blue Delivery, winner of the Best Film Award at the Napoli Film Festival and chosen to participate at more than 15 national and international festivals and Res Creata, a film that takes on the theme of the relationship between humans and animals, chosen to participate at Hot Docs 2020 and at the Nastri d’Argento Awards in 2021. In 2018, he began writing his first full-length feature film as a director, set in Syria during the civil war.
